Pigeon Fever Is Here: Another Way We Can Support Our Horses

If you live in the Pacific Northwest and have horses, chances are you’ve been hearing about Pigeon Fever lately. And if you’re anything like me, whenever I hear that something is going around the horse community, my first thought is: “Okay…what can I do to protect my horses?”

Pigeon Fever is caused by a bacterium called Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. It most commonly shows up as abscesses, often along the chest or underside of the horse, but it can take other forms as well. Recent cases have been reported in Oregon, so this is a good time for all of us to be paying a little extra attention.

Of course, the basics matter: good fly control, keeping wounds clean, watching your horses closely, practicing good biosecurity, and talking with your veterinarian about prevention and what to do if you suspect your horse has been exposed.

But as a Pranic Healing practitioner who works with horses, I also look at this from another perspective: How can we support our horses energetically—before, during, and after an illness? And this is one situation where I think Pranic Healing has something particularly valuable to offer.

1. Supporting Your Horse Before There Is a Problem

One of the things we learn in Pranic Healing is the importance of supporting the body’s natural ability to maintain balance and vitality.

That doesn’t mean we can guarantee that a horse won’t get sick. And I would never suggest that Pranic Healing replaces the very practical things we know are important for preventing Pigeon Fever.

But we can be proactive.

When there is illness circulating in an area, we can use Pranic Healing protocols intended to support the horse’s energetic vitality and immune system.

I like to think of this as adding another layer of support.

You’re already feeding your horse appropriately. You’re making sure they have clean water. You’re managing their environment. You’re controlling flies. You’re watching for injuries and changes in behavior.

Energetic care can simply become another part of that picture.

And because Pranic Healing doesn’t require us to physically handle the horse, we can do this without adding another layer of exposure.

2. What If Your Horse Actually Gets Sick?

This is where things get serious—and this is where I want to be very clear:

If your horse has a fever, develops an abscess or swelling, becomes lethargic, goes off their feed, becomes lame, or you have any reason to suspect Pigeon Fever, call your veterinarian.

Pranic Healing is not a substitute for veterinary care.

Your veterinarian needs to determine what is actually going on and whether your horse needs medical treatment, drainage of an abscess, medication, diagnostic testing or other care.

But while your horse is receiving veterinary care, there are also ways we can provide energetic support.

As Pranic Healers, we have protocols that can be used to support the energetic aspects of the immune system, fever and physical stress, as well as the horse’s overall vitality and comfort.

Again, the goal isn’t to claim that we’re “killing the infection” with energy healing.

The goal is to support the horse while their physical body is doing the hard work of dealing with illness.

And sometimes, having something additional we can do for our horses can also help us feel less helpless when they’re not feeling well.

3. And Here’s Something Especially Important During an Outbreak: We Can Work Remotely

This is one of the things I really appreciate about Pranic Healing for horses.

We don’t have to be physically there.

If your horse is sick or your barn is under increased biosecurity precautions, the last thing you may want is another person coming into the barn.

That’s completely understandable.

With distance healing, I can work with your horse energetically without coming onto your property.

I don’t need to walk through your barn.

I don’t need to enter your horse’s stall.

I don’t need to touch your horse.

And I don’t need to handle anything in your horse’s environment.

That means we can provide energetic support while respecting the physical precautions that are so important during an infectious-disease situation.

Your veterinarian and essential caregivers still need to be there, of course. But an energy-healing session doesn’t have to mean another person physically entering the barn.

That’s a pretty wonderful option to have available.

Think of It as One More Tool in Your Horse-Care Toolbox

I’m not suggesting that Pranic Healing is the answer to Pigeon Fever.

I’m suggesting that it can be one more tool.

We can take the practical steps we already know are important:

  • Keep flies under control.
  • Pay attention to cuts and wounds.
  • Watch your horses closely.
  • Know what is happening in your local horse community.
  • Follow appropriate biosecurity practices.
  • Work with your veterinarian when something doesn’t look right.

And alongside all of that, we can support our horses energetically.

We can work with them proactively when they’re healthy.

We can provide supportive energetic care when they’re dealing with illness.

And, when necessary, we can do that work from a distance, without adding another physical visitor to the barn.

Don’t Panic—Just Pay Attention

I think that’s probably the biggest message I’d like to leave you with.

Hearing that Pigeon Fever is showing up nearby can be unsettling. But rather than becoming fearful, this is a good opportunity to become a little more observant and proactive.

Know what to look for.

Have a plan.

Talk with your veterinarian.

Take reasonable biosecurity precautions.

And if Pranic Healing is already part of your horse’s wellness routine—or you’d like to explore it—it can be another way of supporting your horse through whatever comes their way.

Our horses rely on us to look after the whole picture.

Their physical health. Their environment. Their emotional well-being. And, for those of us who work with energy, their energetic health as well.

During an outbreak, sometimes the best thing we can do is combine all of those approaches thoughtfully.

And when we can support our horses without even having to step into the barn?

That’s a tool worth having in our toolbox.

A Note About Veterinary Care

Pranic Healing is a complementary energetic practice. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent Pigeon Fever or any other infectious disease, and it should never replace veterinary care. If you think your horse may be sick, please contact your veterinarian. Pranic Healing can be used alongside appropriate veterinary care as a complementary form of support.
